Inspiration

When I was in graduate school working on my PhD, I had to write my qualifying exams….two days of answering individualized essay questions about my areas of expertise  within psychology. My advisor, a wise woman, suggested that I not study on the night before – but that I psych myself up with an inspirational movie….her choice was “Stand and Deliver”. The story of an inspiring teacher was just what I needed to get myself in the mode of thinking “success” for the next few days.

In a similar vein and in anticipation of tapering for Disney, Steve has decided to re-watch “Spirit of the Marathon” on Netflix tonight. I’ve previously commented about this awesome movie.

I just have to say – this is probably just what I need now….an emotional reminder of the fact that anyone can run – and run in a race. Granted – I’m not running a full marathon (I’m only 1/2 crazy as the joke goes). But watching these “everyday” people train helps me realize that I’m not alone.

So here I sit – with a box of tissues and a glass of Gatorade…..and I recommend this movie highly….even for non runners. It truly highlights the joys of training, the friendships that running can create, and how running a race is not about winning (unless you are an elite). It is about running for joy, for health, and for finding a bit of yourself you didn’t know about prior to running…..
