The sisterhood of the running pants….

I spent the better part of many of my childhood Saturdays reading in the bleachers during my younger sister’s track meets. She ran for our church’s CYO team and then for our school. It’s funny – I never thought about her back then as a “runner” – it was just something that Stacia did – she ran track. And apparently she was quite good given the number of ribbons and medals that lined her bedroom walls…and only sustained one memorable injury (a broken bone in her foot during a hurdles event).

Stacia’s 3 years younger than me and likes to say that God gave me all the good hair and the boobs. Of course I complain that He saved for her the better metabolism, tons of awesome brain cells, musical talent, and the willpower and body type to be a very fit athlete. We get along well these days (even buying each other the exact same birthday card this year…our brays are 6 days apart) – but as sisters we have had our moments (and years) of bickering, fighting over clothes, and loving each other as only sisters can.

Stacia’s always kept fit and exercised…although I always thought of her as a “treadmill” runner – more exercising than working at being a runner. Then I started noticing talk of 5Ks and 10Ks on Facebook and in our conversations. She and her husband starting posting distances and runs on Facebook – and their pace is impressive. We’ve talked them into the family’s plans for the Turkey Trot this fall – and we’re in the stages of planning for them to do the Disney weekend with us in January.

Yesterday Stacia said she’d want to do the DIsney 1/2 with me.

“Or you could run it with Rob or do the Marathon relay with him,” I suggested.

“No – he wants to run the 1/2. I don’t have any time goals.  And what’s the point of coming to run with you if I don’t actually run with you?  I want to run with you,” she said.

At that – my heart warmed…or maybe it was the fear that was creeping over me. She has no clue how slow I really am….

This morning – Steve and I were trying to get her to run in the morning before the rest of the family arrived…

“I don’t like to run in the morning,” Stacia said.

“It’s good for you! Come on…you’re awake.”

She narrowed her eyes and asked, “How far do you run?”

I said that today I was only planning 3 – especially given my issues with my worn out cross-trainers.

She said, “Oh – I run for 12 songs – which is like 6 miles.”

Oh dear……now I started to sweat thinking ahead to Disney.  “Well I like to run/walk – so we can all just leave the house at the same time….”

She looked at me. “If I come running this morning with you – will you just run the whole way?”

Sure – why not completely embarrass myself in front of the sister who I look up to (even though she’s a good 5 inches shorter than me)?

I went off to get dressed as my daughter gave her aunt fair warning….

“Aunt Stacia, don’t let Daddy leave you in the dust!”

“But I’m not running with your daddy – I’m running with your mommy.  Will she leave me in the dust?”

“Hmmm….is this your first time running?”

*laughing* “No.”

“Well then I don’t think you’ll have a problem keeping up with her.”

Have I mentioned that my daughter is 6 going on attitude?

So we headed off. Me in my usual XL running shorts, favorite bra and t-shirt. Stacia in a cute little top over shorts she used to run in in middle school – 20+ years ago. But they’re Spandex, Jenn. And the waistband is worn out. Oh yeah – that makes me feel so much better – and thinner.

I managed to make it for 10 minutes and change (nearly 1 mile) before I needed a walk break. Which she was good about….and even encouraging.

In fact Stacia kept me strong for 3.19 miles….and even kept my walking breaks strong. I really didn’t want to walk as much but remember that darn shoe issue – I felt the blisters forming as we ran….despite her point to focus on anything but the fact that my body was running. And I was really touched and excited that she was willing to keep herself slower to stay with me and be a cheerleader for me. (Oh yeah – she was also a cheerleader in school….)

“Come on we’re almost there….around the corner to Mom’s house…”

“Isn’t this fun – you are doing great….”

“Did you hear those dogs?  Know what that means – we’re gonna need to run faster…”

“Just let your legs do all the work…”

“Want me to tell you a story?  What can I talk about to help you?”

My contribution to the conversation was limited to repeated apologies: “I’m sorry I’m so slow….”

I don’t know what it’s like to have an older sister….but I know what my siblings think of having an older sister:  She’s bossy, tries to mother us, never has much fun, needs to loosen up, should stop worrying, is slightly annoying, etc….. Okay that’s probably not all of it…our baby brother would be quick to point out the other things I forgot about… I know I wasn’t the easiest to live with when we were kids. Or even as adults they’d both probably add… But I’m really glad Stacia pushed all that aside while we ran (okay – she ran, I trudged)….Or if she thought of how annoying her big sister can be – she didn’t mention it.  Thanks sis.

All in all – I learned how much I need to improve before Disney. (Yes it was hot and humid and it’s hard to judge in this weather…but still…) And I learned that my sister is just as awesome as I always have known her to be. The last bit of the run she promised to buy me chocolate if I didn’t take another walk break….and that she’d also eat it for me.  That’s true sisterly love.

Now….let’s see if she can keep that up for 13.1 in January….

Just a little patience….

We are now in North Carolina visiting my parents. So I’ve added running in Illinois and North Carolina in the last week. And a short hike in TN as we took the kids through the Great Smoky Mountains.  (Our 1/2 mile hike up to Clingman’s Dome made it clear to me that Leadville and Western States are never in my future!)

My runs as of late have resulted in some major blisters on my right foot – and I’m clearly pushing the limits of what my little cross-trainers can accomplish. I’m counting the days till we get home and I can hit Fit2Run for a new pair of running shoes. But in the meantime, I’m willing to risk a few blisters to keep up my runs. I’m not really pushing for any long runs – I’ve learned the limits of my moleskin and band-aid fixes – but I’ve managed to work on my pace a bit and keep the legs working.

As I was running this morning – I was considering how impatient I am for new shoes….and for more weight loss….and for my official training plan to start….and for my pace to improve…and for my long runs to get longer….and for the Disney weekend…..and and….you get the picture.

Yet about 1/2 a mile later – I realized how many good things come with a bit of patience and time.  I know I know – old cliche. But so true. Here I am just about 6 months from when I started Couch to 5K and I’m powering through nasty blisters to make sure I get in 3 miles this morning.  Really?  When did that happen?  Well – not overnight that’s for sure. It has taken lots of miles – and sweat and patience – to get to this point. And the same is true for the next steps….I want them to come fast – but the reality is that it takes time.

So as I made it towards home, I considered all the ways that I’ve come pretty far since I’ve been running…..the fact that I feel more fit (even if the scale disagrees) and that my clothes fit better (mostly) and that I have more stamina and energy.  My mental focus has improved so much in the last few months. Not necessarily gaining IQ points – but certainly slowing the loss of neurons!

You sometimes have to sit back and take a long view of what you’ve done….and where you’ve come from. And so far – it seems like I’m definitely on a good path.  So I need to keep in mind one of my favorite quotes to put on my syllabi for my college students:

A lot of people want a shortcut. I find the best shortcut is the long way, which is basically two words: work hard.    — Randy Pausch

Quick run by…

We’re still visiting family…and still working runs in here and there. I’ve ditched the worn out running shoes (well – saving them to bring to our favorite running store to discuss the issue) and am attempting some mileage in my old cross-trainers. Guess what – same wear pattern.  And now I’ve had several blisters come and go this week. Ouch. Clearly there is a flaw in my right foot. Ha!  I might just have to become a barefoot runner.

I did go to a local sports good store and looked at shoes. Found a pair of Asics that I loved…but I really want to get a good pair and I really trust the staff at Fit2Run – so I’m suffering for a few more runs before we get home….just so I can get a good foot analysis. Meanwhile I’m just going to suck it up so I get at least some miles under my belt. Cause I’ve discovered that I hate not running!  Pretty cool!

Birthday and blisters

So yesterday was my birthday – 41 feels better than 40 did.  For some reason….oh wait yes that’s right – cause I’m more active than I was at 40!

Family gave me Galloway’s 1/2 marathon book and a Nathan fuel belt.  Now that is not what I would have predicted a year ago!  🙂

And of course I started the new year with a morning birthday run. Got to run with my husband….and he was very sweet to slow his pace to stay with me for the whole 3.1 miles.  We’re in his hometown visiting his family and he has run these streets before so he has a better sense of distance than I do. But I was touched that he slowed down for me….and cheered me the whole way. I’m very very blessed – to have a birthday to celebrate with an awesome husband and wonderful kids and family.

Today I planned a 6 mile run – testing out the new belt.  Well the belt works but my temporary fix for my shoe blow out was a bust. I’m not sure why my one heel wore out so quickly and so badly. But my fix with moleskin and some padding on my foot did not work. I was doing so well today – had shaved 20 seconds off my first mile. I was so excited…apparently the run with Steve had inspired my legs.

But at about 1.5 miles I realized my foot was hurting in not a good way. I kept going for another .5 mile but it only got worse. All the padding I had stuck in there was wiggling up and down with my foot falls – and a good blister was forming.  (It hadn’t bothered me yesterday – which was good….) So I finally had to admit defeat otherwise risk a really bad blister. I loosened the shoe and hobbled home about 1.5 miles as well as I could.

Honestly I nearly cried. I had been feeling good and going strong.  (I had tried to measure my cadence as per Galloway’s book and I was getting a bit faster with each trial.) But I really didn’t want to injure my foot unnecessarily. So off to hunt for new running shoes….not many running stores here in my husband’s hometown. But there are a few options….cause NOT running is NOT an option.  🙂  And how incredible that is from where I was a year ago…

Ugh…worn out shoe…

I’ve had a major blister on the back of my right foot for two days. I wanted to shake my finger at June and the group run I did on Saturday. They worked me to a blistered state!

But nope – just a case of my running shoe being worn out in the back of the shoe….so worn out that there is actually a hole. And a piece of plastic is poking out.  Hmm…might be the source of the pain.

Not happy about how quickly these shoes (or at least the right shoe) gave out.  I’ve put 166 miles on them according to Nike+….although I ran in them for a few weeks before that…and I’ve occasionally worn them to the gym and grocery store. So probably closer to 200?  220?  Not sure…

I’m a bit confused how I wore out one shoe and not the other….but no time for confusion. We are packing for our trip to visit both sets of grandparents over the next 2 weeks. (We have it backwards in our family – it’s supposed to be the grandparents who live in Florida and you go there to visit them….not us. We leave Florida to go visit them. Hm…) I’ve packed all the running gear and clothes…and I’m going to have to make these shoes work. Packed some moleskin which should help – I hope. (Learned about moleskin from a friend who was a ballerina.)  I’d prefer to not have to find a running store and new shoes while we’re visiting family….

Anyway – here’s hoping I can get miles and blog posts in while gone…..with few blisters as a result!

It’s the latest in fashion

That’s what I keep saying when people ask me about the blue tape on my right foot and ankle. I’ve been taping my foot for the past week in an attempt to help heal the mild case of plantar fasciitis I seem to have developed. I’m pretty sure it’s mild as stretching and exercises are helping. And so far I can still walk – just some pain in the morning when I get out of bed.

The tape is KT tape – developed by sports medicine people as a new athletic tape better designed to support muscle groups. Comes in lots of lovely colors – although my local WalMart only had a few choices. I’ve been running in it and wearing it 24 hours. The tape is not going to “cure” the problem but does provide a lightweight way to support to the muscles. I’ve been happy with the results so far.

A friend whose husband has suffered from a bad case of plantar fasciitis commented on it the other day. When I told her what it was, she said bluntly, “Well that’s not going to help.” Her husband has spent a lot of money on a boot and shoe inserts and such. I said – well let’s start with $8 tape roll and see. I’m hopeful.

Of course my poor fashion sense is nothing compared to the guy I saw out running yesterday. He was in what must be the Speedo equivalent of running shorts for men. No shirt.  Fine – lots of fit guys like to run shirtless (for self-promotion or whatever). But his rather large belly made it challenging to *ahem* see the front of his shorts…..something I can never “unsee” unfortunately.  Hey, I’m all for running in what makes you comfortable – but please be considerate and don’t try to make others feel uncomfortable when they see more of you than they’d like.
